MAL isn’t “that band” that is trying to sell you on their image… (see previous blog posts) they are selling their music, their art & the inner-workings of true musicians. Stuck looking for a band that doesn’t sound like every other “indie” band at the present moment? Ears craving some pure, raw Rock ‘N Roll? Then give MAL a listen.
MAL is the alt-rock brainchild of hard-hitting trio Kris Jung (guitar, vox), Kevin Davidbadal (drums) and Peter J. Hollywood (bass). Jung has been involved with many other LA bands over the years; most notably Radio Free America and BlackCast, but MAL is something special. They released their first album last February and have been playing numerous shows since the release. A sound so robust and melodic is difficult to master given a structure built on only three solid components, but this band has more to offer than most four, five, or even six-piece bands. Consult the video for Vimana below as evidence.
Their self-titled debut album has been the exclusive go-to driving soundtrack over the past few months (at least in a J. Jensen world). The only true and honest description of their sound is ROCK… pure and simple. Influences ranging anywhere from Jane’s Addiction, Nirvana, and even Tool can be heard throughout the duration of the album, but the sound that they have created is all their own. The lovable aspect about this band is that their live show quality is just as amazing as the high-quality achieved in the studio. Also notable is the fact that three talented musicians can create (and actually recreate live) a sound that other bands that have five members can not is a testament to just how much talent these guys really possess. Any enjoyment experienced while listening to their CD is exactly what will be offered at any of their live shows. It’s a damn shame that the same can not be said about more bands these days with the inclusion of auto-tune and Pro-tools that is so easily accessible to anyone with a computer and some extra cash in their pockets.
